From her studio in Ballard, Nan Wonderly has been working in repurposed tin for over a decade. The choice to upcycle metal into art comes from her commitment to environmental sustainability. By using consumer products at the end of their intended lifecycle, without driving the manufacture of new chemicals, it is a conscious creative action in response to environmental destruction.
Using the colors on the tins as her palette, the individual cut pieces become brushstrokes, at times gestural, at others precise. In her work the colors speak, like an interplay of words, where different colors act as verb, noun, adverb, conjunction.
The body of work presented at Domanico Cellars contains several prototypes for a new direction for Wonderly. By breaking the plane of the rectangle, she introduces an element of musicality in her work.
