Runics Writings Basics Class
March 21 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
$15Back by popular demand, Northwest Viking Alliance elder William Goetz will teach us the basics of runes and runic writing during the Viking Age. This class will cover the development and evolution of runic systems along with linguistic progressions in the respective cultures who used them, as well as the practical use of runes for writing and how they were generally utilized.
Runic writing was not a totally standardized system, but this class covers common writing conventions and methods of transliteration to help participants gain the ability to confidently read and write messages using authentic Viking Age runic script. Participants will also have the chance during the class to write and transliterate their own runic messages in a couple of group activities.
Outline:
– Runic and linguistic developments from the Migration Period through the Viking Age and High Medieval periods
– Overview of younger Futhark runes
– Writing basics
– Transliteration basics
– Closing/Questions/Recommendations
Our full kitchen and bar will also be open during the class. Your ticket includes a $5 bar/food credit. This event is welcome to all ages.
