Zhoushan Collection/Liang Wei
February 17, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
FreeWe are excited to host our first international show in the Barrel Room Gallery.
This unique and historic collection of paintings were created 40 years ago by the fishermen from the Zhoushan Islands off the chinese coast.
This body of work has been brought to us by noted Chinese artist Liang Wei, who will also be exhibiting his work in the same show opening this February 17th.
In the late 1970’s, artist Li Feixue, a colleague of Liang Wei, opened a workshop for the Zhoushan Island community. His class was an opportunity for the fishermen to learn and study and record their impressions of the hundreds of sea creatures the encountered on a daily basis.
These works were made by anonymous members of the fishing community. This grassroots art is unique, and reflects the fishermen/artist’s vision of their life on the sea.
According to Li Feixue, these people have now evolved from fishermen to businessmen as the island area near Shanghai has been developed over the last three decades making these images a truly lost art.
A portion of the proceeds from this show will be donated to charity.
